Kylian Mbappe’s international break has been cut short after the Real Madrid star suffered a knee injury during France’s 1-0 win over Turkey in the Nations League on Friday.
Mbappe scored the only goal of the game before being forced off shortly afterwards, with France coach Zinedine Zidane confirming that the captain will leave the national team camp.
Mbappe struck in the 55th minute after being set up by Michael Olise, firing a low shot past the Turkey defence to give France the lead. It was a landmark goal for the Real Madrid forward, extending his record tally for France to 67 goals.
However, moments after finding the net, Mbappe sat down on the pitch and appeared to be in discomfort while rubbing the area around his left knee.
Zidane Confirms Mbappe Will Leave France Camp
Mbappe was subsequently replaced by Desire Doue as France opted not to take any further risk with their captain.
Speaking after the match, Zidane admitted that the injury was concerning and confirmed that Mbappe would return to Madrid.
“No, it's not good. It's not good, unfortunately,” Zidane told French television.
“He will have to go back. We will not take risks, he has extended his knee when he took the shot. It's not very encouraging.”
A France official later confirmed that Mbappe had suffered a knee tendon injury and would return to Madrid for treatment.
Real Madrid Await Further Assessment
The decision to send Mbappe back to Madrid means the forward will now undergo further medical assessment and treatment with his club during the international break.
The extent of the injury and his expected recovery period are yet to be determined, meaning Real Madrid will be waiting for more clarity before assessing his availability for their upcoming fixtures.
Mbappe’s absence could also affect France’s next Nations League fixtures. France are scheduled to face Belgium away on Monday before hosting Italy on October 2 and Belgium three days later at the Stade de France.
