Indian weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu finally has an Asian Games medal to add to her impressive collection. The Tokyo Olympic silver medallist won silver in the women’s 49kg category on Wednesday, recording a total lift of 198kg. She lifted 88kg in the snatch and followed it up with 111kg in the clean and jerk.
Chanu’s medal is also India’s first Asian Games weightlifting medal since Karnam Malleswari won bronze in 1998.
Chanu Ends Long Wait For Asian Games Medal
The Asian Games silver was one of the few major medals missing from Chanu’s cabinet.
The 31-year-old already has an Olympic silver medal, three World Championship medals, including a gold, along with several Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Championships titles. She had also won bronze at the Asian Championships.
After two previous Asian Games campaigns without a medal, Chanu finally broke the jinx in her latest appearance.
Strong Comeback After Snatch
Chanu began the competition with an 83kg lift in the snatch. She then successfully lifted 85kg and 87kg with her next two attempts. That effort left her in third place after the snatch section.
She needed a strong performance in the clean and jerk and delivered with a best lift of 111kg, taking her overall total to 198kg and securing the silver medal.

Ri Song Gum Claims Gold
North Korea’s two-time world champion Ri Song Gum dominated the competition to take gold.
Ri lifted a total of 215kg, comprising 94kg in the snatch and 121kg in the clean and jerk. Her performance also set a new Asian Games record.
The victory gave Ri her third consecutive Asian Games title in the women’s 49kg category.
For Chanu, however, the silver marked the end of a long wait and added another major achievement to an already decorated career.
