Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC will renew their fierce rivalry when they meet in the IFA Shield 2026 final on Thursday, October 8, at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) in Kolkata.

With another major trophy on the line, the latest edition of the Kolkata Derby promises to be a high-stakes battle between two teams carrying contrasting memories from their recent meetings.

The Mariners enter the final as the defending champions after beating East Bengal 2-1 on penalties in last year's IFA Shield final. However, the equation has changed considerably since then.

East Bengal produced a commanding 4-1 victory over their arch-rivals in the Durand Cup final in August, with Edmund Lalrindika scoring a first-half hat-trick.

That defeat will give Mohun Bagan extra motivation as they look to respond on the biggest stage once again. East Bengal, meanwhile, will be hoping their recent dominance can translate into another trophy against their oldest rivals.

Mohun Bagan Eye Another IFA Shield Triumph

Mohun Bagan booked their place in the final after a dramatic semi-final against Punjab FC. The match remained goalless after 120 minutes before the Mariners prevailed 4-3 in the penalty shootout.

Goalkeeper Vishal Kaith played a decisive role by making two important saves during the shootout, while Miguel converted the decisive penalty to send the defending champions through.

Mohun Bagan have another opportunity to defend their IFA Shield crown, but they will have to overcome a confident East Bengal side.

East Bengal Arrive After Seven-Goal Semi-Final

East Bengal, on the other hand, produced an emphatic performance in their semi-final against NorthEast United FC. The Red and Gold Brigade secured a 7-2 victory to reach the final, with David Lalhansanga among the standout performers after scoring a hat-trick.

The result has given East Bengal considerable momentum heading into the derby, although the side will also have to manage the workload of players who recently returned from international duty.

Head coach Antonio Lopez Habas has indicated that he wants his team to settle the contest within 90 minutes rather than take their chances in a penalty shootout.
