The 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia has been postponed by almost a year amid escalating tensions and security concerns in the Middle East. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) confirmed on Tuesday, November 3, that the continental tournament will now be held from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028, instead of its originally scheduled January–February 2027 window.

The decision follows consultations between the AFC, the tournament’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF).

The governing body cited exceptional circumstances in the region, including logistical complexities and travel disruptions, as reasons for rescheduling the competition.

The revised dates will be submitted to FIFA for approval. Saudi Arabia will continue as the host nation, with the tournament not being moved to another country.

2027 Asian Cup: What Were The Original And New Dates?

The 2027 Asian Cup was originally scheduled to take place from January 7 to February 5, 2027. Under the revised calendar, the competition will begin on December 23, 2027, and conclude on January 21, 2028.

Details Original schedule Revised schedule
Tournament start January 7, 2027 December 23, 2027
Tournament final February 5, 2027 January 21, 2028
Host nation Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia
Teams 24 24

The tournament has effectively been pushed back by almost 11 months, with its final now scheduled to take place in January 2028.

Interestingly, the postponement comes just days after the AFC and Saudi organisers had finalised the match schedule, including kick-off times and venues, for the original January-February window.

Why Has The AFC Postponed The 2027 Asian Cup?

The decision comes amid growing security concerns following attacks in Saudi Arabia and the wider regional conflict.

A strike on Riyadh's international airport last month reportedly killed at least 12 people and injured more than 300. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement claimed responsibility for the attack. Further security concerns emerged after the Houthis said they had launched drones towards Dammam airport.

These developments raised questions about the safety of teams, officials, supporters and other stakeholders travelling to Saudi Arabia for the tournament.

In its official statement, the AFC said the decision was taken in light of the "current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region, including substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions".

Which Cities Were Set To Host The 2027 Asian Cup?

Saudi Arabia will remain the host nation for the 19th edition of the AFC Asian Cup. The tournament was planned across three cities, Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar, with eight stadiums scheduled to stage 51 matches.

The competition will feature 24 national teams, including hosts Saudi Arabia, and will be the country's first time hosting the men's continental championship.

The original schedule had Saudi Arabia facing Palestine in the opening match on January 7 at King Fahd Sports City Stadium in Riyadh. The final was also scheduled to be played at the same venue on February 5.

Saudi Arabia Responds To Asian Cup Postponement

Despite the postponement, Saudi Arabia has reiterated its commitment to hosting the continental competition.

Yasser Al-Misehal, head of the local organising committee, said the country had been fully prepared to stage the tournament according to the original schedule. He added that preparations would continue with the same momentum for the revised dates.

Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in hosting major international sporting events in recent years, with the 2027 Asian Cup also viewed as an important step in its preparations for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
