Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the 2026-27 season after Paris Saint-Germain produced a late attacking surge to secure a thrilling 4-2 victory in the UEFA Champions League at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, October 20.

In a match filled with attacking football, momentum swings and injury concerns, the reigning European champions showed their quality in the closing stages to maintain their perfect start in the competition.

Barcelona fought back twice through youngsters Xavi Espart and Lamine Yamal, but late goals from Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz settled the contest in PSG's favour.

The defeat ended Barcelona's unbeaten start to the campaign and exposed defensive weaknesses ahead of their highly anticipated El Clasico clash against Real Madrid.

PSG Take First-Half Lead Through Desire Doue

PSG began aggressively in front of their home supporters, putting Barcelona under pressure with their pace and movement in the final third. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia came close early on, while Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia was called into action to keep his side in the contest.

The hosts suffered an early setback when Ousmane Dembele was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury around the 20-minute mark. However, the setback did not prevent PSG from maintaining their attacking intensity.

Desire Doue broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, giving PSG a deserved lead after a strong spell of pressure. Barcelona went into the interval trailing but remained within touching distance despite struggling to contain the home side's attacking threat.

Xavi Espart And Lamine Yamal Keep Barcelona Alive

Barcelona responded after the break, with teenage defender Xavi Espart scoring in the 55th minute to level the contest. The goal was a significant moment for the youngster, who marked his Champions League debut with a strike against the defending champions.

PSG restored their advantage through Lucas Hernandez in the 72nd minute, putting Barcelona under renewed pressure. But Lamine Yamal produced a moment of individual quality to equalise in the 79th minute, briefly raising hopes of a comeback.

The response, however, was short-lived. Just two minutes later, Vitinha restored PSG's lead with a superb strike from outside the penalty area. Fabian Ruiz then sealed the result in the 86th minute, finishing off Barcelona's hopes of salvaging a point.

The entertaining encounter came at a cost for both sides, with injuries disrupting their plans. PSG lost Dembele in the first half, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and captain Marquinhos were also forced off after the break with fitness concerns. The full extent of their injuries was not immediately confirmed.

Barcelona also suffered a setback when Dani Olmo was substituted due to injury during the first half. The Catalan side were already without key defenders Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia, both unavailable for the trip to Paris.

Garcia had sustained a right thigh injury, with Barcelona estimating a recovery period of three to four weeks, while Kounde was dealing with a left ankle sprain.
