Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has a strong message to his players after the Reds suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat against Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday, November 1.

A controversial penalty incident involving Alexander Isak became the biggest talking point after the match, with Iraola suggesting that his players might have to start going down inside the penalty area to earn decisions from referees.

The incident occurred during the first half when Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber pulled back Isak inside the penalty area. However, the Swedish striker stayed on his feet and attempted to reach the ball instead of going to ground. Referee Andy Madley allowed play to continue, while VAR did not intervene.

Iraola’s Verdict On The Penalty Incident

Speaking after the game, Iraola expressed his frustration and admitted that he might have to change his instructions to his players.

"It's a shame you ask me this question. But honestly, yes, we have to tell them to go down because they are not going to call it otherwise," Iraola commented.

"I don't see the reason why. Only because he hasn't dived or he hasn't gone to the floor. It shouldn't be a reason, but of course it's a penalty," he added.

The comments have erupted into debate around simulation and refereeing standards in English football, particularly whether players who attempt to stay on their feet are being disadvantaged.

Iraola Praises Liverpool's Response Despite Defeat

Despite his disappointment with the penalty decision, Iraola acknowledged that Liverpool created enough opportunities to get something from the game.

Arsenal took the lead through Kai Havertz in the 16th minute after capitalising on an Alisson Becker error. Liverpool responded with attacking intent, but Florian Wirtz saw his free-kick hit the crossbar, while other promising opportunities went unfinished.

"We had good chances; we hit the crossbar and had good situations we were not able to finish. We definitely deserved a goal," Iraola stated.

He also praised his players' mentality after conceding, adding, "I loved the reaction from my players after going 1-0 down. I loved a lot of moments of the game."

What's Next For Liverpool?

Liverpool must quickly shift their attention to a demanding November schedule. The Reds are scheduled to face Fenerbahce in the UEFA Champions League on November 4 before travelling to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on November 8.

They will subsequently host Manchester United at Anfield on November 22.

"We have to keep going. It is very early in the season. Arsenal are in the best of situations, but it is just the start of November today," the Liverpool manager concluded.
