Indian tennis has a new rising star in Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi, who has created history by reaching the singles quarter-finals of a WTA Tour event. The teenager has become the first Indian woman in 14 years to achieve the milestone, following in the footsteps of former Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza.

Her breakthrough marks an important moment for Indian women's tennis, which has been waiting for another sensation to make an impact at the top level of the professional circuit.

Maaya's impressive run has also brought attention to the country's emerging generation of tennis players.

Born in 2009, the 17-year-old is one of India's most promising young tennis players. Hailing from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Maaya has been making steady progress on the international circuit while balancing junior and professional tennis.

She has also been associated with the Rafa Nadal Academy, where she has continued developing her game. Her progress at the junior level has been encouraging, with the teenager reaching World No. 16 in the junior rankings.

Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi's Historic Chennai Open Campaign

Maaya entered the Chennai Open 2026 main draw as a wildcard and made the most of the opportunity. Her breakthrough began with a stunning victory over eighth seed Katarzyna Kawa of Poland.

The Indian teenager produced a remarkable comeback to defeat the higher-ranked opponent 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(5). She recovered from 2-5 down in the deciding set before clinching the match in the tie-break.

She followed it up with another impressive performance against Polish qualifier Weronika Falkowska. Maaya secured a 6-4, 6-3 victory to book her place in the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 tournament.

What Did Maaya Say After Creating History?

Despite achieving a major milestone, the teenager remained grounded and highlighted the importance of continuing to improve rather than getting carried away by the achievement.

Speaking after her victory, Maaya acknowledged that she was not entirely satisfied with her performance but was pleased with how she found a way to win.

"I am happy to get the win. It was not as good as I wanted it to be, like yesterday, but I am happy that I found ways to win," she said.

She also spoke about the importance of recognition for Indian women's tennis, adding that she wanted to focus on her performances and learn from every match.

Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi's Next Challenge

The Indian teenager will face American Robin Montgomery in the Chennai Open quarter-finals. Montgomery, a former 's-Hertogenbosch champion, presents another difficult challenge for the 17-year-old.

A victory would take Maaya into her maiden WTA Tour-level semi-final and further strengthen her growing reputation in international tennis.

Fourteen years after Sania Mirza's last WTA singles quarter-final appearance in Pattaya in February 2012, Indian women's tennis has another teenager making headlines.
