The FIFA World Cup semi-final match, in which Argentina and England will meet, had an unforeseen development even before it kicked off, as FIFA declared a significant modification to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system that would be used for the elite face-off.
Making it known that VAR will be managed from inside Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta for the first time in history rather than from the centralized Video Operation Room at the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) in Dallas constitutes a big operational change for FIFA.

Why Has FIFA Changed The VAR System?
During the duration of the FIFA World Cup 2026, VAR officials have monitored games from afar and in an uninterrupted manner from the centralized VAR facility located in Dallas, regardless of where those matches were held throughout the three countries involved in the tournament: the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
However, for the upcoming semi-final match between Argentina and England, FIFA has chosen to perform VAR operations at Atlanta Stadium on the spot where the game will be hosted.
In an official statement, FIFA explained: "The video match officials for the semi-final between England and Argentina will be based at Atlanta Stadium alongside the on-field match officials, rather than operating from the Video Operation Room at the International Broadcast Centre in Dallas."
FIFA said this action is aimed at improving coordination between referees and VAR officials while at the same time reducing the chance of any technical problems or delays while examining important moments in the game.
The organization hopes that having the video officials physically present in the stadium will facilitate faster connections during tense decision-making moments in the biggest matches of the competition.
