Google gave Search one of its biggest upgrades in decades at this year’s , held at the Shoreline Amphitheatre on Tuesday. The company says the new experience is the most significant transformation of the Search box in more than 25 years, with AI now becoming central to how people interact with Search.
At the heart of the update is a redesigned intelligent Search box powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash. Unlike the traditional compact search field, the new interface expands dynamically, giving users more room to type detailed questions naturally. Google says the system is now better at understanding context and intent, while also offering smarter AI-driven suggestions that go beyond standard autocomplete prompts.
Search is also becoming far more multi-modal. Users can now combine text, images, videos, files, and even Chrome tabs in a single query. Despite the growing AI focus, Google says traditional web results will still appear alongside AI-generated answers, allowing users to choose how they explore information.
The company also confirmed that Gemini 3.5 Flash is now the default model powering AI Mode globally. According to Google, the updated model delivers stronger reasoning, coding, and agentic capabilities while remaining fast and responsive. Users will also be able to continue conversations directly from AI Overviews and move seamlessly into full AI Mode chats across both desktop and mobile.
One of the more ambitious announcements at the event was the introduction of “Search agents.” These AI-powered systems are designed to continuously monitor information and perform background research tasks on behalf of users. Google says the first version, called information agents, will be able to track blogs, social platforms, shopping listings, finance updates, news sites, and sports information based on specific user goals.
For example, someone looking for an apartment or waiting for a sneaker drop could ask the AI agent to keep checking the web and send updates once certain conditions are met. These features are expected to launch this summer for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers.
Google is also expanding agentic booking inside Search. Users will be able to make natural language requests for local services, such as finding karaoke venues with private rooms and food service. Search can then gather pricing and availability details and redirect users to booking platforms. In some categories, AI will even be able to call businesses on behalf of users. The rollout is expected to begin in the US later this summer.
Another major reveal focused on AI-generated interfaces and coding experiences powered by Google Antigravity and Gemini 3.5 Flash. Google claims Search can now create custom visual layouts, simulations, graphs, tables, and interactive interfaces tailored to individual queries.

The company also announced a wider expansion of Personal Intelligence in AI Mode, which is now reaching more than 200 countries and supporting 98 languages. Users can connect apps such as Gmail and Google Photos to personalise responses further, while Google Calendar integration is expected later. Google stressed that users will remain in control of whether AI systems can access connected services.
