Instagram Hashtags Limit News: It seems like Instagram users won't be able to flood hashtags anymore, as the tech giant has announced limits for content discovery on its platform. Meta-owned social media giant is enforcing restrictions on the number of hashtags users can attach to a reel or post. Instagram has capped hashtags at five per post and Reel, saying fewer targeted tags improve performance and user experience. Meta warns generic hashtags do not help reach and may hurt visibility, reinforcing that hashtags are no longer key to discovery.
Instagram Limits Hashtags On Posts And Reels
Instagram has officially reduced the number of hashtags creators can use in a post or Reel. According to the Meta-owned platform, creators will now be allowed to add a maximum of five hashtags, replacing the earlier limit of up to 30.

The company says the change is designed to improve content discovery while preventing misuse of hashtags through excessive and irrelevant tagging.
Why Instagram Is Reducing Hashtag Usage
Introduced in 2011, hashtags have long been used to help content surface in topic-based searches, trending feeds, and algorithm-driven recommendations. However, Instagram now believes that fewer and more relevant hashtags deliver better results than stuffing posts with generic tags.
Through its Creators account, Instagram said that using up to five targeted hashtags can improve content performance while also enhancing the overall user experience on the platform.
“We find that using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content's performance and people's experience on Instagram,” the company stated.
Generic Hashtags May Hurt Performance
Instagram has cautioned creators against using broad hashtags such as 'reels' or 'explore'. According to the platform, these commonly used tags do not actually help content appear on the Explore feed or recommendation surfaces.
Instead, Instagram says such hashtags can negatively impact performance. Creators are being encouraged to choose hashtags that closely match the subject of their content. For example, beauty creators are advised to use beauty-specific hashtags to reach users genuinely interested in that category.
The Testing Phase Led to Final Rollout
The move follows earlier reports suggesting that Instagram was testing an even stricter limit of three hashtags per post. Some users reportedly saw in-app notifications stating that only three hashtags were allowed while adding them to posts. The current cap of five appears to be the final version of that experiment.
Hashtags No Longer Drive Reach
Instagram head Adam Mosseri has previously confirmed that hashtags no longer play a major role in driving reach or visibility on the platform. He clarified that hashtags are not a primary signal for distribution, reinforcing Instagram’s shift toward content relevance and engagement over tagging tactics.
