India's gaming market is getting bigger, and it is also getting more complicated. The industry crossed the $1 billion mark in 2025, while the number of gamers in the country is expected to cross 550 million in 2026. Along with the growing player base, esports, PC and console gaming, game development and the creator economy are all becoming a bigger part of the picture.
Gaming creators are a good example of how much the space has changed. Many gaming and esports personalities now have audiences well beyond gaming, with their content increasingly finding a place in mainstream entertainment and culture.

That growth is also changing what gamers expect from their hardware. Storage, which has traditionally been one of the less exciting parts of a gaming setup, is becoming harder to ignore as games get bigger and digital libraries keep growing. This is where Sandisk's new SANDISK Optimus™ portfolio comes in.
Sandisk’s New SSD Lineup Is Built Around Different Users
Sandisk introduced the SANDISK Optimus™ range in 2026 as the new name for its internal SSD portfolio. The lineup is divided into three tiers, with the SANDISK Optimus™ GX SSD specifically aimed at gamers.
There is also the SANDISK Optimus™ GX PRO SSD, which is designed for developers, professionals and gamers who need more from their systems, including those building AI PCs, workstations and high-end gaming PCs.
For gamers in India, the focus on storage comes at an interesting time. Buying a powerful GPU or processor is still a major part of putting together a gaming PC, but storage can have a noticeable impact on everyday use too. Faster NVMe™ SSDs can make installing games, moving files and getting into games less of a chore, while also helping keep the system responsive.
Large Game Libraries Are Making Storage More Important
Game sizes have grown considerably over the years, and most gamers are no longer dealing with just a handful of titles. Digital libraries can quickly fill up a drive, particularly when several large games are installed at the same time.
That can lead to a familiar problem: deleting a game to make room for something new, only to download it all over again later. Moving games and other large files between drives can be just as frustrating.
This makes capacity an important part of the storage equation. The SANDISK Optimus™ portfolio is designed to combine speed with higher capacities, giving users more space for large game libraries as well as other demanding workloads.
SSDs Are Becoming Part of the Performance Conversation
GPUs, CPUs and RAM have traditionally received most of the attention when gamers talk about performance. SSDs are starting to get more recognition, particularly as newer systems and applications take advantage of faster storage.
The SANDISK Optimus™ GX PRO 8100 is one example. It is a PCIe® 5.0 NVMe™ SSD with sequential read speeds of up to 14,900MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 14,000MB/s on the 2TB and 4TB models.
Those numbers matter for more than just getting a game to load. Gamers are increasingly downloading large updates, moving recordings, running several applications and dealing with large files at the same time. Faster storage can make those jobs less cumbersome.
Handheld Gaming Is Adding to the Storage Demand
The storage issue is not restricted to gaming PCs. Handheld consoles are also dealing with increasingly large games and growing digital libraries.
Sandisk's SANDISK microSD™ Express cards are designed for handheld gaming consoles and offer read speeds of up to 880MB/s. They are available with capacities of up to 1TB, with the 1TB card capable of storing up to 36 games (Considering an approximate game size of 25 GB).
Sandisk has also included ThermAdapt™ technology, which is designed to help keep the card's temperature within operating limits during use.
For handheld gamers, additional storage can be particularly useful because there is only so much space available on the device itself. A larger card means fewer compromises over which games stay installed.
Gaming PCs Are Becoming Content Creation Machines Too
There is another reason storage is becoming more important: gaming itself has expanded beyond simply playing games.
Streaming, recording gameplay, editing clips and managing large video files are now routine for many creators. India's growing gaming creator community makes this particularly relevant, especially as gaming personalities increasingly reach audiences outside the traditional gaming space.
For these users, the same PC may be used to play a game, record it, edit the footage and store the finished video. That means the storage drive is dealing with far more than game installations.
What This Means for Indian Gamers
India's gaming market has already crossed the $1 billion mark, and the country is expected to have more than 550 million gamers in 2026. But the bigger change is happening in the way people are using gaming hardware.
PCs, consoles and handhelds are becoming part of a broader entertainment setup, while esports and creators are bringing gaming to audiences that may not consider themselves traditional gamers.

That also gives storage a bigger role. A modern gaming setup may need enough space for a growing game library, fast enough performance for large file transfers and enough headroom for recordings, editing and other demanding workloads.
Sandisk's SANDISK Optimus™ portfolio is aimed at that shift, with the GX SSD targeting gamers and the GX PRO SSD covering developers, professionals and higher-end users.
For gamers, the SSD may not be the first component they talk about when building a new system. But with game sizes increasing and gaming increasingly overlapping with streaming and content creation, storage is becoming something worth thinking about before the drive starts running out of space.
