OpenAI is back in the news for ungodly sums of work for eye-popping amounts of money. This time round, the maker of ChatGPT is recruiting for a senior leadership position focused on handling the mounting risks coming with advanced artificial intelligence, which comes with an annual pay package just north of $500,000.
And it was announced by the organisation’s CEO, Sam Altman, who described it as a tough, high-stakes role at an important time when AI capabilities are increasing faster than ever.
Role in OpenAI’s Safety Team With High Stakes
Announcing on X, Altman wrote that OpenAI is hiring a new Head of Preparedness to join its Safety Systems team. The person who gets the job, he said, will be “thrown into the deep end almost immediately,” underscoring how challenging and significant the role is intended to be.

The role will focus on identifying, assessing and mitigating risks that may occur due to increasingly powerful AI systems. That includes “thinking ahead to what adversaries might be able to do in the future, running tests to estimate how dangerous AI systems are, and developing technical measures that can help us learn if and when something appears particularly unsafe.”
Altman also noted that while the latest AI technologies are reaping massive rewards, they are now starting to reveal real-world problems and will need significant scrutiny. Among the issues he cited are AI’s effect on mental health and the increasingly worrisome capability of advanced models to reveal severe security flaws.

The hiring spree, which has come as OpenAI’s products have been the subject of continued scrutiny, is just one part of its argument for why it needs to raise significantly more money. ChatGPT, which now is among the most popular of a class of AI tools for writing, research and planning, has been used by some as a therapy substitute.
This has flagged up potential dangers of harmful interactions where AI systems could accidentally reinforce delusions or self-harming tendencies. OpenAI has acknowledged these worries in the past and assured that they are collaborating with mental health specialists to enhance protections and mitigate against harm.
Replacing a Key Safety Leader
The new hire will take the place of OpenAI’s old Head of Preparedness, Aleksander Madry, who transitioned to a separate position at the organisation this time last year. The new head will be responsible for threat modelling, safety mitigations and internal reviews to keep up with the rapid scaling of OpenAI’s technical capabilities, according to the job listing.
Compensation Reflects the Pressure
The position, according to the details posted, has a salary of approximately $555,000 annually plus equity. The pay does not just indicate the seniority of the role but also the stress, responsibility and long-term impact associated with managing safety risks at one of the world’s most influential AI companies.
As AI systems grow more powerful and increasingly entwined with our daily lives, OpenAI’s quest for a new preparedness lead underscores how seriously the company is thinking about the risks of rapid innovation.
