Microsoft might be preparing for a major shift in its cloud gaming strategy. There are reports surfacing online that Xbox might introduce a free tier of Cloud gaming plans. This plan will allow users to stream and play games without an active Xbox Game Pass subscription. Some users have even spotted the plan inside the Xbox app. This could be a game-changing move if a free-tier plan is launched. As this might remarkably expand the Xbox’s cloud gaming reach, especially among the casual players who are not willing to pay for gaming. Although there is no official launch date revealed yet, the reports suggest that the service could arrive in 2026.

Free Cloud Gaming Without Game Pass

As per the reports from Windows Central, the new upcoming plan of Xbox with an ad-supported tier will allow players to stream Xbox games that they already own digitally. So they will not be required to buy any Game Pass subscription.

Key highlights include:

- One-hour ad-supported sessions

- No Game Pass requirement

- Session-based access model

- Free monthly playtime limits

This makes Xbox Cloud Gaming more accessible for occasional or casual use.

Limited Free Hours and Ad Format

Also, a report from The Verge says that Microsoft is already testing the service internally and with Xbox insiders. As per reports, the current testing limit includes 1 hour of session duration, with monthly free usage of up to 5 hours and ads shown before starting the session.

It is also possible that users might also be able to stream select Free Play Days titles and Xbox Retro Classics, along with their own purchased games.

Microsoft Has Been Testing This Since 2025

Till now, Xbox Cloud gaming has only been available to the Game Pass subscribers. But Microsoft confirmed that they were experimenting with a free ad-supported version of the cloud gaming model separate from the Xbox Game Pass.

Later in 2025, Microsoft also revamped Game Pass into three tiers:

- Ultimate

- Premium

- Essential

All three plans now include unlimited cloud gaming access.

Availability and Platform Support

Currently Xbox Cloud Gaming is already available across multiple devices, including LG smart TVs, through the Xbox app. And the free tier could further expand adoption in regions where consoles and subscriptions remain costly.

Final Thoughts

This could be a great option for people who want to play high-end games but are not willing to pay a hefty price for gaming PCs, consoles, and buying games separately. The ads will help Microsoft to monetise the plan but still offer services to casual gamers. If executed well, this move could strengthen Xbox’s position in the fast-growing cloud gaming market and challenge rivals that still rely heavily on paid subscriptions.
