The United States is not considering the option of returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine, according to White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. In a statement on Sunday, Sullivan responded to a recent New York Times article that suggested US President Joe Biden could potentially provide nuclear arms to Ukraine before leaving office.

He firmly rejected this possibility, clarifying that the US is focused on supplying Ukraine with conventional military support to help defend itself against Russia. Sullivan emphasised that the focus is on conventional weapons, not nuclear capabilities.

This development comes after Russia labelled the idea of returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine as 'absolute insanity', claiming that preventing such a scenario was a key reason for its military actions in Ukraine.

Ukraine had inherited nuclear weapons after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, but under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, it agreed to relinquish those weapons in exchange for security assurances from Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
