An ambulance driver charged Rs 17,500 from the family of a BJP leader after he was killed, along with 18 others in a road accident on the Yamuna Expressway on Tuesday.

BJP leader Akhilendra Pratap Yadav's body was transported to Prayagraj, officials said on Thursday. Based on a complaint filed by Yadav's family, the Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) intervened and ensured that the amount was refunded in full, they added.

Yadav was a resident of Prayagraj and a close associate of Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Khanna. On Monday, he had travelled to Prayagraj to condole the death at the residence of Cabinet Minister Girish Chandra Yadav.

From Prayagraj, he left for Delhi to congratulate the newly appointed BJP national working president Nitin Navin.

On Tuesday morning, his car met with an accident on the Yamuna Expressway amid dense fog after colliding with another vehicle.

After the accident, he stepped out to assess the condition of the car. A bus coming from behind rammed into it, crushing him between his vehicle and the bus. He was killed on the spot, the officials said.

The authorities sent the bodies of the victim, including his, to a mortuary for the post-mortem. The family alleged that the private ambulance, which was arranged to transport Yadav's body, demanded Rs 17,500 as fare from Mathura to Prayagraj even before setting off the journey.

Having no option at that time, the family transferred Rs 5,000 immediately to the driver's mobile phone and assured that the remaining amount will be paid after reaching home, the complaint said. The remaining amount was paid accordingly.

After the complaint was lodged, the matter came to the notice of Additional District Magistrate Dr Pankaj Kumar Verma on Wednesday. He assured the family of the recovery of the amount. 

The officials added that the complete amount was refunded on Thursday. Confirming the incident, Dr Verma said that the money collected from the deceased leader's family has been returned in full.
