Encroachment on government land earmarked for a proposed Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in the pilgrimage town of Brijghat has finally been removed following complaints to senior authorities. The land, illegally occupied for farming, was cleared by the tehsil administration on Tuesday after the issue was highlighted by villagers and social activists.

According to residents, several individuals had encroached upon 84 bighas of government land located along the national highway, where a modern ISBT is proposed to be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 350 crore. The land is registered in the name of the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, but construction of the bus terminal has not yet begun.

Farmer Vikrant Singh had earlier written to the Chief Minister and concerned department officials, alleging that land mafia elements had started farming on the vacant land due to the prolonged delay in the project. He claimed that despite repeated complaints, no notices had been issued to the encroachers and no action had been taken, raising questions over the administrative monitoring of government land.

Residents warned that the continued encroachment could have led to disputes if timely action was not taken. The ISBT project was approved in 2019 to develop an airport-style bus terminal equipped with modern passenger amenities such as ATMs, RO drinking water, waiting halls, toilets and parking facilities. The terminal was intended to facilitate the smooth operation of state transport buses to destinations across the country, but the project has remained on paper.

Following intervention by senior officials, the tehsil administration conducted an eviction drive on Tuesday and cleared the transport corporation’s land of illegal occupation.
