Six years after receiving allotment letters in a 2019 draw, beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in Ghaziabad are still waiting to get possession of their homes. The ambitious central government scheme, launched seven years ago to provide housing for the lower-income group, has been stalled by official negligence, causing the hopes of allottees to fade.
Multiple Projects Delayed Beyond Deadlines
The Ghaziabad Development Authority launched several projects under the PMAY (Urban) scheme with a promised two-year completion timeline. These include:
Madhuban Bapudham: (856 homes) Launched on July 11, 2018, with a target completion of 2020.
Dasna: Launched on March 11, 2019.
Niwari: Launched on June 10, 2019.
Noor Nagar: Launched on December 20, 2019.
Pratap Vihar: Launched in 2022.
Despite a lottery draw being held in 2019 to allocate the flats, none of the beneficiaries have received possession.
External Development Work Remains Incomplete
The primary reason for the delay is the failure to complete essential external development work. The Jal Nigam (Water Corporation) was responsible for critical infrastructure, including the connection of external water pipelines and the construction of water head tanks.
According to reports, despite several orders and directives, this work remains unfinished. These failures have brought the Prime Minister's ambitious housing project to a standstill in the city, leaving the intended low-income beneficiaries deprived of their promised homes even after years of waiting.
