In a major infrastructure push to decongest the state capital, the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation is fast-tracking the construction of a new underpass at the busy Avadh Chauraha. Once operational, the project is expected to provide significant relief to a population of over 500,000 residents and streamline connectivity for travelers heading to Kannauj, Agra, Mathura, Noida, and Delhi.
Currently, commuters waste 25 to 30 minutes in traffic jams at this junction. Officials estimate that the new facility will save enough time for a driver to cover an additional 15 to 20 km. The project comes as a long-awaited relief for users of the Agra Expressway who have frequently demanded a solution to the bottleneck.
Project Details And Progress
The underpass is being constructed as a two-lane, double girder box structure with a total length of 887.36 metres.
Box Section: 350 metres
Approach Ramp: 282.16 metres
Exit Ramp: 255.20 metres
To ensure smooth traffic flow, a central divider will be installed on the two-lane ramp. The Bridge Corporation estimates that over 15,000 vehicles will use the underpass daily.
Work is progressing rapidly, with more than 40 per cent of the construction already completed. While the official documented completion date for civil works is June 2027, engineers are making concerted efforts to finish the project by December 2026. The total cost of the project is pegged at Rs 14,637.20 lakh.
Traffic Management Impact
The underpass is designed to allow vehicles coming from VIP Road to directly access the road to Para, bypassing the intersection. Authorities predict a 40 per cent reduction in traffic load on the surface level, as only vehicles moving from Charbagh towards Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport, Unnao and Kanpur, along with local traffic, will use the road above the underpass.

Modern Amenities And Safety Features
The project includes several modern upgrades to ensure safety and durability for the next 25 to 30 years:
Waterlogging Prevention: Specific civil works are being integrated to prevent water accumulation during monsoons, addressing the common issue of rainwater entering via ramps.
Security: CCTV cameras will be installed inside the underpass and linked to the police control room, mirroring the surveillance system on the Lucknow-Delhi Agra Expressway.
Lighting: An improved lighting system will be installed for better visibility.
This project is part of a broader initiative by the Bridge Corporation to construct several bridges, flyovers, and road overbridges across urban and rural areas to improve the capital's infrastructure.
