As cold conditions tighten their grip across the NCR, night shelters (rain baseras) set up by the district administration at various locations are witnessing a steady rise in the number of people seeking refuge. With temperatures dropping over the past few days, passers-by and destitute individuals have increasingly begun spending nights at these shelters.

In Noida, the number of people staying in night shelters has risen steadily over the last three days, with around 20 to 25 people taking shelter every night. Being a major hub for industry and education, the city attracts people from different states in search of employment, many of whom are now relying on these shelters during the cold spell. The night shelter operating at the Delta Community Centre is among those witnessing regular footfall. According to the caretaker, people start arriving at around 10 pm and leave by 8 am.

Meanwhile, shortcomings identified during a surprise inspection of night shelters by the District Magistrate three days ago have been addressed. During the inspection, the District Magistrate expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of proper sleeping arrangements, as bedding had been laid directly on the floor. He directed officials to arrange cots immediately, following which beds have now been provided in the shelters.

Post-inspection, administrative teams have been conducting regular visits to ensure that all facilities are in proper condition. Cleanliness and safety are being closely monitored. Harendra Bhati, a member of the Active Citizen team, said officials are checking the cleanliness of bedding, electrical wiring, lighting arrangements, availability of safe drinking water, and the condition of toilets at the shelters.

In addition, residents from various sectors and social workers have stepped forward to support the initiative. To protect the poor and homeless from the cold, locals are preparing tea and breakfast at their homes and distributing it at the night shelters, providing much-needed relief during the harsh winter conditions.
