If you still possess Rs 2,000 banknotes in your home or business, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has advised exchanging them immediately. While the central bank initiated the withdrawal of these high-denomination notes in May 2023, approximately Rs 6,000 crore worth of currency remains in circulation more than two years later.

Current Status And Validity

The RBI has clarified that Rs 2,000 notes continue to be legal tender, meaning they remain valid for payments. However, they are no longer accepted for regular transactions at most bank branches or retail outlets. As of October 31, 2025, approximately 98.37 per cent of the Rs 2,000 notes in circulation have been returned.

The withdrawal is part of the RBI's "Clean Note Policy," aimed at removing old and less-used currency from the system. Printing of Rs 2,000 notes ceased after the 2018-19 fiscal year due to their limited use in daily transactions.

Where And How To Exchange

The facility to deposit or exchange Rs 2,000 notes at commercial bank branches ended on October 7, 2023. Currently, the exchange process is exclusively available at 19 RBI Issue Offices across the country.

Locations: The 19 offices are located in major cities including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, New Delhi, and Chennai. (In Uttar Pradesh, this includes offices in Kanpur and Lucknow).

Procedure: Individuals must visit an RBI branch personally.

Documents Required: As per a circular from RBI Chief General Manager (CGM) Brijraj, depositors must carry identification documents (such as an Aadhaar card) and bank account details to ensure the amount is correctly credited. The Regional Director of the RBI in Lucknow emphasized that a prescribed form, available at the branch, must be filled out and submitted along with the notes and ID proof.

Public Confusion Addressed

Authorities have noted confusion among the public regarding the validity of the notes, with fears that they might be rejected or lose value due to delay. The RBI has reiterated that the notes remain valid legal tender and urges the public to utilise the specific exchange counters set up at its regional offices to deposit any remaining currency.
