Uttar Pradesh’s fragile electricity infrastructure has led to widespread accidents, resulting in the deaths of 3,606 people over the past two and a half years. This includes 257 electricity workers and 3,349 ordinary citizens. Additionally, 3,600 cattle have died, and crops worth crores of rupees were destroyed in 3,825 fire incidents.

Most cattle deaths occurred due to fallen electric wires in waterlogged areas, for which compensation was provided by the electricity department. The total compensation for human deaths alone has reached around Rs 200 crore. In one tragic instance in the Shankar Puri Phoolbagh area of Hussain Ganj, Lucknow, eight-year-old Fahad died from electrocution.

Following an investigation, UP Power Corporation Limited paid his family Rs 5,00,000. Similarly, in Ismailganj, three cows died from electric shocks due to rain-related waterlogging, with each was compensated approximately Rs 15,000.

Data from the Directorate of Electrical Safety shows that electricity-related accidents remain high, with roughly 11,000 incidents reported between March 2023 and September 15, 2025, across Madyanchal, Purvanchal, Dakshinanchal, Paschimanchal Discoms, and KESCo.

Officials note that while the department often suppresses reports, public protests trigger investigations and ensure accountability.
