Following the success of Operation Sindoor, Uttar Pradesh has ramped up its surveillance on social media, particularly focusing on individuals who post messages in support of Pakistan or engage with content from Pakistani sources. The state police have formed a special team within the social media cell at the DGP headquarters to monitor such activity around the clock.
The dedicated team, consisting of six expert officers, is working in eight-hour shifts, ensuring constant surveillance on online platforms. In addition, social media teams from all districts have been activated to assist in the efforts. DGP Prashant Kumar has instructed strict action against individuals posting or sharing provocative or objectionable content.
The surveillance comes in response to an increase in misleading and inflammatory posts following India's military operations in Pakistan. Some social media users, particularly in Meerut, have come under police scrutiny for expressing support for Pakistan. One individual posted "Pakistan Zindabad" on a Pakistani post, while another changed their WhatsApp display picture to a photo of a girl holding the Pakistani flag. Two Muslim youths from Meerut have been arrested in connection with these incidents.
Police are also monitoring for posts that use coded language related to Pakistan. In cases where objectionable content is identified, immediate action is being taken to delete the posts and issue warnings. Authorities are particularly concerned about mischievous elements attempting to disrupt peace and are focused on ensuring any content that could harm national security is swiftly removed.
