Uttar Pradesh’s Fisheries Development Minister Dr Sanjay Kumar Nishad has directed officials to ensure that pond lease holders are effectively supported through fairs and awareness camps, where they can access all necessary information in one place. Chairing a review meeting at Vidhan Bhavan on Wednesday, the minister stressed the importance of completing the pond leasing process at least six months in advance through coordination with the Rural Development Department, Panchayati Raj, and the Revenue Council.
Highlighting the potential of the fisheries sector to contribute significantly to revenue and employment generation, Dr Nishad said the government's aim is to make Uttar Pradesh self-reliant in fish production. He urged officials to adopt innovative techniques and technologies in fisheries to enhance productivity.
The minister also emphasised promoting fisheries as a viable self-employment avenue, especially for the rural population and the fishing community, thereby contributing to their economic upliftment. He added that in line with the state’s goal of achieving a one trillion dollar economy, the functioning of the Fisheries Development Department must be reviewed every 15 days at both district and headquarters levels.
Dr Nishad instructed that maximum benefits be extended to fishermen through the UP Matsya Palak Kalyan Kosh and directed officials to increase the number of operational ponds, mobile fisheries sale centers, and fish retail outlets.
Principal Secretary K Ravindra Nayak, also present at the meeting, warned that strict action would be taken against any officials found negligent in their duties. Director General of Fisheries Rajesh Prakash also attended the session.
