Rishikesh Geared Up For New Year Celebrations; Hotels In Tapovan And Shivpuri See High Demand
Tourists are flocking to Rishikesh for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

With the countdown to Christmas and New Year officially underway, the tourist influx into Rishikesh has begun to accelerate. Enthusiastic travellers from across the country are flocking to the hill station, drawn by its natural beauty and spiritual significance. Consequently, advance bookings for hotels and camps in key areas such as Tapovan, Shivpuri, and Laxman Jhula are witnessing a sharp rise.

Surge in Bookings: Tapovan and Shivpuri Lead Advance bookings for the New Year period are continuously increasing across Rishikesh, Muni Ki Reti, Tapovan, Shivpuri, and Laxman Jhula.

Tapovan and Shivpuri: These areas are recording the highest demand, with main hotels already seeing 60 to 80 per cent occupancy. Several major hotels in Tapovan are reported to be fully booked.

Laxman Jhula (Pauri): This area, home to approximately 150 hotels and over 80 campsites, has received about 40 per cent bookings so far. While bookings for Christmas Day remain relatively lower, hoteliers are optimistic that numbers will rise significantly in the coming days.

Preparations And Attractions

Hotels and camp operators are making extensive preparations to ensure a memorable experience for guests. Special arrangements, including musical performances, dance events, and cultural evenings, are being organised for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Camping remains a major attraction, with tourists showing great interest in sites located in Shivpuri, Neer Gaon and Mohan Chatti, all situated adjacent to Rishikesh.

Hoteliers' Concern Over Traffic

Restrictions Despite the positive outlook, local hoteliers have raised concerns regarding traffic management protocols. Uday Singh Negi, Secretary of the Laxman Jhula Hotel Association, appealed to the administration regarding police checkpoints.

"We demand from the police administration that tourist vehicles coming to Laxman Jhula via Tapovan-GarudChatti should not be stopped by the police at the Kadiya Katal barrier. This causes tourists to cancel their local hotel bookings and head to Haridwar instead," said Negi.

Traffic Management Challenges

Given the heavy influx of tourists expected during the festive week, severe traffic congestion is a major concern. Managing the flow of vehicles will be a challenge for the police forces of three jurisdictions: Rishikesh (Dehradun), Muni Ki Reti (Tehri), and Laxman Jhula (Pauri).

To tackle this, the police administrations of all three districts are emphasising mutual coordination. Plans are underway to deploy additional personnel for security and traffic regulation, and a comprehensive traffic plan is being drafted to handle the New Year rush.

Why Rishikesh Remains The First Choice

Rishikesh is strategically significant due to its geography and accessibility.

Connectivity: Being the first hill station on the route, it offers a shorter travel time for tourists from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana compared to higher-altitude destinations.

Geography: The hill station encompasses Tapovan and Shivpuri (Tehri district) and Laxman Jhula (Pauri district), with all major areas located within a 10 to 25-kilometre radius of the main town.

Spirituality And Wellness: It remains the top choice for those interested in yoga, meditation, and Panchakarma. Key spiritual attractions include Parmarth Niketan, Gita Bhawan, and Gita Ashram in Swargashram; Dayanand Ashram, Madhuban Ashram, and Shri Shatrughna Mandir in Muni Ki Reti; and the ancient temples of Shri Veerabhadra, Shri Someshwar, and Shri Chandreshwar Mahadev in Rishikesh.
