To tackle Mussoorie’s growing traffic woes, the Uttarakhand Metro Rail Corporation (UKMRC) has proposed a ropeway network connecting key tourist spots. A meeting chaired by State Cabinet Minister Ganesh Joshi brought together municipal leaders, departmental officials, tourism stakeholders, and local representatives to review the project’s Detailed Project Report (DPR).

According to UKMRC, the plan includes multiple ropeway routes: 3.71 km from Gandhi Chowk (Library Bazaar) to George Everest, 2.83 km from Gandhi Chowk to Lal Tibba, 4.67 km from Camel’s Back Road to Kempty Fall, and 2.30 km from Kincraig Parking to Kulri Bazaar (Chic Chocolate). A 7.44 km extension from George Everest to Dudhli Bhadraj Temple is also under consideration.

Minister Joshi cautioned that the project could face hurdles related to land acquisition, forest and environmental clearances, cantonment approvals, and other departmental permissions. He stressed that the ropeway must not proceed until all no-objection certificates are secured, citing delays in the Purukul ropeway project as a precedent.

Municipal Chairperson Meera Saklani highlighted the need for consultations with local business owners, especially in Landour and Camel’s Back Road, to avoid adverse economic impacts. She also underscored the importance of parking facilities at ropeway terminals to manage tourist inflow.

UKMRC Managing Director Brijesh Kumar Mishra said the ropeway plan is aligned with the expected tourism surge from the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway and Purukul-Mussoorie ropeway. He noted that the shortest route, from Kincraig to Kulri, would benefit both tourists and over 150 hotels in the vicinity.

The meeting also included discussions on legal and regulatory compliance, with stakeholders offering suggestions for refinement of the DPR. UKMRC assured that all feedback will be incorporated in subsequent consultations.

Representatives from the Hotel Association, Traders’ Association, police, Jal Sansthan, electricity department, ITBP Academy, and local councillors attended the meeting.
