A recent disaster has left a trail of destruction across 5,125 villages in Uttarakhand. While the efforts of relief teams are helping life return to normal, the fear of the catastrophe has been permanently etched in people's hearts.

The devastation was not limited to Dharali-Tharali, as several districts throughout the state were impacted. The disaster damaged village roads, electricity poles, transformers and power lines. It also resulted in the loss of life and property, affecting homes, shops, markets, agriculture, livestock and communication systems.

Chamoli was the most affected district, with 1,697 villages impacted. In Pauri Garhwal, 915 villages were affected, along with 593 in Tehri Garhwal and 512 in Dehradun. In addition to the hill districts, the disaster also wreaked havoc in 166 villages in Haridwar.

The government has restored normalcy in the affected villages through immediate relief and rehabilitation work, but experts believe much more needs to be done to cope with future disasters.

District-wise Impact:

Rudraprayag: 297 affected villages

Udham Singh Nagar: 232 affected villages

Pithoragarh: 73 affected villages

Uttarkashi: 468 affected villages

Nainital: 98 affected villages

Bageshwar: 50 affected villages

1,070 Km Of Power Lines, 5,988 Poles And 419 Transformers Damaged

The disaster caused heavy losses for Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL), as electricity infrastructure across the state was severely affected. According to a survey report, a total of 1,070 km of electric lines, 5,988 electricity poles, and 419 transformers were either washed away in the floods or damaged. The total estimated loss is reported to be Rs 517.1 million.

Havoc In Over 300 Villages Of Dharali-Tharali

The electricity department suffered extensive damage in the Dharali-Tharali region. In Tharali, a total of 37 km of lines and 228 poles were damaged, affecting 318 villages connected to the electricity distribution division. Meanwhile, in Dharali, 14 km of lines and 84 poles were damaged, disrupting the electricity supply in nine villages.

"Electricity supply has been restored in the disaster-affected villages as part of immediate arrangements. Work has now been initiated under a long-term plan, and the remaining tasks will be completed as soon as the monsoon ends completely," said Madan Ram Arya, Director (Operations).
