11-Year-Old Girl Performs Bharatanatyam Video: The ocean became a stage for an 11-year-old girl from Puducherry, who used her dance to send a powerful message about plastic pollution. Instead of performing on a usual stage, Thaaragai Aarathana chose the deep sea, diving nearly 20 feet underwater to show the dangers plastic waste poses to marine life. A trained Bharatanatyam dancer and certified diver, Aarathana performed the classical dance in full traditional attire, complete with jewellery and makeup.
The performance was not just art, it was a bold statement, combining talent, courage, and a mission to protect the oceans. A video of her underwater dance, shared on Instagram by Shubham Bhardwaj, has gone viral. Captioned "Thaaragai Aarathana, The Girl Who Turned Dance Into an Ocean-Saving Mission," the visuals capture her graceful movements against the backdrop of the ocean, making every gesture count. Without any music or words, she used only her expressions and dance to highlight how plastic harms marine life.
The inspiration behind her unique mission comes from a personal experience. During a dive, Aarathana saw turtles trapped in fishing nets, a moment that deeply affected her. Since then, she has been actively cleaning the seas, removing around 3,000 kilograms of plastic waste herself. Her father, who has been involved in marine cleanup for 18 years, has collected over 37,000 kilograms of trash from the ocean.
