Earth Day 2024: Just a few years back, sustainable living was mostly a fancy term for many, where a majority of people went for it only when convenient. However, with the world witnessing some of the most disastrous phenomena due to the ongoing extreme climate change, the same ‘fancy term’ has now changed into a ‘need’. Yes, climate change and global warming are a thing, and people need to acknowledge it as soon as possible. And with the world celebrating Earth Day today, April 22, what better day to remind people of the same? Which is exactly what Google did with its doodle.
Acknowledging the day, Google celebrated Earth Day 2024 with a doodle, surrounding the theme 'Sustainability’. For the said doodle, Google used satellite images of some places from across the world, which somewhat formed the letters the site wanted to represent. The places used were natural formations like rivers, grasslands, corals, and more. As per the Google Doodle, all the places used in the doodle were protected natural beauties that are otherwise under the great threat of being ruined because of global warming.
The aim behind going for the satellite images of these protected biodiversities, as per Google Doodle, was to remind the world of the ‘climate crisis and biodiversity loss’, along with raising some ‘hope and optimism’ for the slow and steady change that Governments and concerned people are trying to bring.
In the doodle itself, the ‘G’ of ‘Google’ was displayed through the Turks and Caicos Islands, while the two ‘Os’ were represented by the Scorpion Reef National Park in Mexico and Iceland’s Vatnajökull National Park respectively. The other ‘G’ was represented by Brazil’s Jaú National Park, while the Great Green Wall in Nigeria was used for the letter ‘L’. Coming to the last one, the ‘E’ was represented by Australia’s Pilbara Islands Nature Reserves.
