Belgium Fire: Several people were killed in a fire that broke out on Wednesday morning in an apartment block in the Belgian city of Antwerp. The local fire department received a call at 9:53 am (local time) reporting a “raging fire” on the eighth floor of a 10-storey apartment block in the Linkeroever area of Antwerp.
Several Killed As Blaze Engulfs 10-Storey Building
According to a Reuters report, citing local police, the building has been evacuated. It was home to more than 200 residents. Authorities confirmed that several people were injured in the incident. Police also urged nearby residents affected by smoke to keep their windows and doors closed and, if necessary, switch off ventilation systems to avoid inhaling smoke.
Several fire brigades from different districts were deployed to the site to bring the blaze under control. According to local media reports, residents were seen climbing from balconies to windows as the fire spread through the building.
Rescue Efforts Underway
The cause of the fire is not yet known, and an investigation will begin after emergency operations are completed. Authorities are still carrying out search, rescue, and damage assessment work at the site, and further details on casualties are awaited.
