Bangladesh Hindu Attack: Amid the deepening political crisis in Bangladesh, thousands of supporters from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, rallied in Dhaka on Friday, demanding fresh elections and urgent reforms. This comes amid large-scale violence against the minority communities in the country.
Notably, Bangladesh currently has a transition government, headed by former Nobel-winner economist Muhammad Yunus. It was installed after the democratically-elected government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted earlier this year following large-scale violent protests.
Interim Govt Facing Serious Challenges
The BNP is pressuring the interim government to implement quick reforms and hold the next election. Meanwhile, Jia's son Rahman said that the interim government should not be allowed to fail under any circumstances, as it faces serious challenges in restoring order in the country.
Hindus Take Out March
ISKCON officials held a protest on Friday in Chittagong's Hazari Gali area, condemning attacks and acts of brutality against Hindus. The officials stated that misleading information is being spread about the organisation. This comes days after the Bangladeshi army was accused of perpetrating attacks on the houses and localities of minority Hindus.
India Urges Ban To Protect Hindus
India on Friday requested the Bangladesh government to protect and safeguard the minority community members living in the country.
"In Chittagong, incendiary posts were made on social media. Those provocative things were related to the Hindu community. A disturbance happened and some members of the Hindu community were threatened and many properties were looted," an MEA spokesperson said.
"Extremist elements" are behind this, and such things can lead to an increase in communal tension, Jaiswal told reporters.
"It is our request to the government there to control and take action against these elements and take strong measures to ensure the safety of people of the Hindu and other minority communities."
