The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran is now in its fourth week, with growing uncertainty over when the war will truly end. The latest developments, which claim that “negotiations” between Washington and Iran are underway, also appear to be untrue, further complicating the already tense situation. The situation has become even more complex due to US President Donald Trump’s shifting statements over the week. At the beginning, he claimed that the United States would unleash an unforgettable attack.

However, Trump's push for a ceasefire with Iran seems to be a strategic move to buy time, as thousands of US troops are being deployed to the Middle East ahead of his self-declared Friday deadline. Iran has firmly rejected the US' 15-point ceasefire proposal, laying out five conditions to end the war. While Trump claims to be negotiating with Iranian officials, he is also sending more troops to the region, raising questions behind his decision. "If a deal were not agreed to by Friday, then we'll just keep bombing our little hearts out,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday.

What Could Be Behind Trump's Ceasefire Push?

According to a report by the Telegraph, citing US officials, Trump is still weighing aggressive military options even as he negotiates for a possible ceasefire. Amid uncertainty over what could be Trump’s next move, Iran has reportedly begun preparations by laying traps and moving additional military personnel and air defences to Kharg Island.

This comes after reports emerged that the US has increased its military presence in the Middle East for a potential ground invasion. According to a report by CNN, the US has been discussing seizing Kharg Island, which is considered an economic lifeline for Iran that handles roughly 90 per cent of the country’s crude exports while pretending to negotiate. The report added that Washington may be using this tiny island, located in the north-eastern Persian Gulf as leverage to force Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump's 1988 Warning

Another factor which makes it appear that Trump may be up to something is his old warning, where he claimed that he would be “harsh” on Iran. Following the success of his book “The Art of the Deal” in 1988, Trump, while speaking to journalist Polly Toynbee of Guardian, stated that he would make Iran “pay.”

When asked about global affairs, Trump said, “I'd be harsh on Iran.” "I'd be harsh on Iran. They've been beating us psychologically, making us look a bunch of fools. One bullet shot at one of our men or ships and I'd do a number on Kharg Island. I'd go in and take it. Iran can't even beat Iraq, yet they push the United States around.” His warning related to Kharg Island has resurfaced, raising more concern about how the conflict would unfold in the coming days.
