A 34-year-old Pennsylvania man has been arrested and charged with hundreds of criminal counts after authorities allegedly recovered more than 100 sets of human remains, including skulls, bones and decomposing body parts, stolen from a historic cemetery near Philadelphia.

Jonathan Christ Gerlach was taken into custody on Tuesday following a month-long investigation into repeated break-ins at Mount Moriah Cemetery, a sprawling burial ground established in 1855 and considered one of the largest abandoned cemeteries in the United States.

Arrest Follows Month-Long Cemetery Investigation

Police said the arrest culminated an investigation into a series of desecrations at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Yeadon, where at least 26 mausoleums and underground vaults were allegedly forced open since early November. Many of the affected burial sites date back more than a century. Authorities became suspicious after investigators noticed Gerlach’s vehicle repeatedly near the cemetery during the period when the break-ins were reported.

The case took a dramatic turn when officers spotted bones and skulls visible inside a car near the cemetery. Subsequent searches of Gerlach’s home in Ephrata, nearly 70 miles from Philadelphia, and a storage unit linked to him led to the recovery of a large number of human remains. Officials said they found more than 100 skulls, numerous long bones, mummified hands and feet, two decomposing torsos and other skeletal items, most of them stored in the basement of the house.

'Horror Movie Come to Life': Prosecutors

Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse described the scene as deeply disturbing. He said the remains were kept in different conditions, with some hanging, some partially assembled and others placed on shelves. Jewelry believed to be taken from graves was also recovered, and in one instance, a pacemaker was still attached to a body. Rouse said investigators are still working to determine how old the remains are and where they came from, noting that some may be hundreds of years old.

According to court documents, Gerlach was arrested as he walked back to his car carrying a crowbar and a burlap bag. Police allege the bag contained the mummified remains of two small children, three skulls and other bones. Investigators said Gerlach later admitted to stealing roughly 30 sets of human remains from Mount Moriah and showed authorities several of the graves he allegedly targeted.

Gerlach has been charged with around 300 counts, including theft, receiving stolen property, abuse of a corpse, burglary, trespassing and intentional desecration of historic burial sites. He is currently being held on USD 1 million cash bail. Court records do not list a lawyer representing him. Officials said the investigation began after a nonprofit group working to preserve Mount Moriah Cemetery alerted police to widespread damage. With no fencing and multiple access points, the cemetery has long been considered vulnerable. Authorities said identifying the remains and returning them to their rightful resting places could take months, as families now wait anxiously for answers.
