Iran-US Tensions: Iran on Saturday announced the suspension of its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding with the United States, as tensions between Tehran (MoU) and Washington continue to rise over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the country has stopped implementing the commitments and is focusing on defending itself amid the ongoing confrontation.

Iran Accuses US Of MoU Violations

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tehran has suspended its commitments under MoU with the US, according to Iran’s Fars news outlet. He accused Washington of violating its obligations under the agreement, saying, “The US has violated and suspended all its commitments within the framework of the Islamabad MoU.” Gharibabadi added that Iran has stopped implementing its own commitments under the MoU and is now focused on defending the country amid the ongoing conflict.

"We have suspended our commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The US has violated and suspended all of its commitments. We have also suspended our commitments, are not currently implementing them, and are focused on defending the country."Gharibabadi said.

Trump Declared Deal ‘Over’ Weeks Ago

The move is significant as it comes days after US President Donald Trump indicated that Washington no longer viewed the agreement as effective. Speaking to reporters alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during NATO summit on July 8, Trump said, “To me, I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them.” He also criticised Iran’s leadership, stating, “They’re scum. They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people. As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time dealing with them.”

Iran-US Tensions Rise

Meanwhile, the conflict between the United States and Iran has intensified after a fragile ceasefire collapsed. The US on Saturday carried out strikes on Iranian military targets for the seventh consecutive night, further escalating tensions in the region. In response, Iran launched attacks on American-linked military facilities in Gulf countries and issued fresh warnings to nations hosting US troops, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
