Amid the escalating tensions between Iran and the United Nations and speculations of war, the latest development marks the sight of relief for both parties, as countries have reached an understanding of the main ‘guiding principles’ of the nuclear deal through the indirect talks on Tuesday. But Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that the development does not indicate the imminent deal. 

“Different ideas have been presented, these ideas have been seriously discussed, ultimately we’ve been able to reach a general agreement on some guiding principles, from now on we will move based on those principles and enter the text of a potential agreement,” Reuters quoted Araqchi as telling Iranian media after the talks concluded in Geneva.

The third round of negotiation will take place after the exchange of documents between the parties. 

The development came amid worsening tensions between Iran and the US, as Trump suggested that ‘regime change’ would be the best thing to happen in Iran. Trump has deployed a battle force to the Middle East to pressure Tehran in the decades-long nuclear dispute, indicating the situation may deteriorate if the deal is not achieved.

Iranian media earlier reported that Tehran would temporarily suspend part of the strategic Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing nuclear talks. The Supreme Leader of Iran also warned Trump against the alleged efforts to destabilise his government, saying such efforts will not succeed. 

Speaking at a disarmament conference in Geneva, Araqchi expressed hope for a “sustainable” solution that would fully recognise Iran’s legitimate rights.
