Iran Protest: Thousands of students at leading institutions in Iran held aggressive protests on Saturday over enforcement of morality policing on the campuses and unemployment. The protests were held almost a month after the administration suppressed the voices of dissent in the top cities of Iran. The Iranian regime, for the past few months, has been dealing with both internal and external crises. The students' protests were held amid escalated pressure from the US over ongoing talks over the nuclear program in Iran.

Why Are Students Protesting?

The students at the key universities of Iran are agitated due to multiple reasons, including the renewed enforcement of morality policing and the installation of surveillance systems to monitor their activities. Apart from this, the protestors have also raised the issue of high inflation and unemployment. The students have also slammed the Khamenei regime for the detention of activists during the previous protests. "We study for a future that does not exist," one placard read at Tehran University.

History Of Student Protests

Several mass unrests in Iran began in the universities, including the 1999 student protest and the outrage following the death of Mahsa Amini back in 2022. The students have played an integral role in these protests in Tehran as the voice of dissent spreads among the people beyond the walls of the universities.

While the security has been heightened on the campuses, the administration is closely watching the protests. The Iranian regime is likely to take aggressive steps if the protests spread among the working class of the country.

Earlier last month during the protests, the regime imposed an internet blackout across the country to control the damage. However, several human rights groups alleged that thousands of protesters were killed during that period.
