Viral claims
The social media posts widely claimed that officials had seized golden underwear, a detail that quickly gained widespread attention online. The reports dubbed the case Iraq’s most significant corruption investigation in recent years. A photo of golden lingerie is widely shared on several social media platforms. In fact, some verified X handles shared the same posts with almost identical claims.
Truth behind 27 kilograms of pure gold underwear found on Iraq MP during a raid
Citing Iraqi media, a report published by the Gulf News on June 29, Monday, said a raid was conducted in the country where more than USD 15.5 million and a large chunk of gold were seized from the house of a lawmaker.
Although, Hind Al-Abbasi was also arrested but there are no credible reports that authenticate the seizure of cash or gold from her house.
According to the report, the cash and gold were seized from Iraqi lawmaker Alia Nassif. Security forces arrested her and her son, who previously served as chief of staff to former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani.
Iraqi state media, citing a senior official, reported that several of Sunday's arrests were based on statements made during questioning by former Deputy Oil Minister for Refining Affairs Adnan Al Jumaili, who was detained on corruption charges in late May.
When asked by Grok and Gemini about the authenticity of the viral claims, the responses referred to a raid at Nassif’s house, not Abbasi’s. The specific allegations regarding USD 57 million, 27 kg of gold, and gold-plated underwear remain based on widely circulated media reports and have not yet been independently confirmed by the Iraqi government.
