Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is travelling to India in his latest effort to diversify trade away from the United States, his office announced Monday. Carney will first visit Mumbai on Thursday for talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and business leaders. "In a more uncertain world, Canada is focused on what we can control. We are diversifying our trade and attracting massive new investment," Carney said in a statement.
Does Carney want to reset India-Canada ties or something else?
Carney's visit to New Delhi came months after Narendra Modi met him on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg to review progress in the India–Canada partnership.
The meeting, which was dubbed the most-awaited and much-needed, given the fact that Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau, had plunged the thriving relations into total chaos.

However, this time, Carney’s visit sounds more opportunity grabbing move than a realisation of Trudeau’s mistakes. The move is seen as Canada’s interest to diversify its trade amid tensions with the Trump administration.
Trump: A headache for Canada
Trump recently threatened to impose a 100 per cent tariff on goods imported from Canada over that country's proposed China trade deal, intensifying a feud with the longtime US ally and Carney.
The confrontation was widely witnessed during the recently concluded Davos Summit, where Carney’s speech stole the show, but geopolitical experts pointed out how the Canadian market has been destroyed by US President Donald Trump’s repeated actions against Ottawa. Carney condemned economic coercion by great powers on smaller countries. The prime minister received widespread praise and attention for his remarks, upstaging Trump at the gathering.
