An Indian crew member suffered injuries, and two foreign nationals died after a commercial vessel came under attack in the Black Sea, the Indian Embassy in Romania said. The embassy said that there were three Indian nationals in the crew; one of them was injured and was receiving treatment. The Indian embassy in Romania stated that it was in contact with relevant authorities and ensured that the Indian nationals were safe.

All Three Indians Safe

Giving the first update about the attack, the Embassy of India in Romania said, “We have learnt of an attack today on a commercial vessel, named MV ROYAD MAMMADOV, in the Black Sea."

According to the initial information, there have been two casualties (foreign nationals), while some crew members have been injured and are undergoing medical treatment in Romania. It is further reported that there are three Indian nationals among the crew members."

The Indian Embassy then stated that the injured people are being treated in the hospital, under strict surveillance. “We are in close touch with the hospital authorities. We are extending all possible support for the welfare and wellbeing of the Indian crew members," an official added.

The embassy’s statements put the number of casualties at two foreign nationals and said some crew members were injured. It did not provide further details about the identities or nationalities of those killed.

Indian Ambassador Speaks To Injured Crew Members

Indian Ambassador in Romania Manoj Mohapatra communicated with the three Indian nationals receiving treatment at Constanța County Hospital, the embassy said. The Constanta Hospital’s chief physician said that all Indian nationals were in good health and that they are receiving necessary care.

“Amb Manoj Mohapatra spoke with the three Indian nationals receiving treatment at Constanța County Hospital. He also spoke with the hospital’s chief physician, who confirmed that all three are in good health and receiving necessary care. The ambassador assured them of all possible assistance and support."

Vessel Hit By Russian Drones

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy said the vessel was hit by two Russian drones while it was in neutral waters. The civilian vessel was carrying corn and was owned by Türkiye, Zelenskyy added.

He said Azerbaijani and Indian citizens were aboard and that the ship’s captain had been killed. He added that the fate of another person was still being established. Zelenskyy said 11 crew members were rescued, one of them injured. He also said Ukraine had repeatedly proposed concrete steps to de-escalate the situation and ensure security in the Black Sea.
