United States President Donald Trump on Saturday suggested renaming either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean as ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas’. The statement follows his recent moves to rename geographical landmarks and change the terminology used for artificial intelligence.
Trump Suggests Renaming Ocean
Speaking at a campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, Trump said he wanted an ocean and a major river to be renamed before leaving office. “So we’ve got the Gulf, we’ve got a beautiful lake. So we need a river, we need an ocean, so I was thinking of either the Atlantic or the Pacific, we'd call it Trump Ocean or Ocean of the Americas, something like that,” Trump told the crowd.
His remarks drew chuckles from the audience as he spoke ahead of the November midterm elections. The video of the same has since gone viral on social media. Trump also referred to his earlier decisions to change the names of major geographical landmarks in the US. He noted that steps to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America had already taken place.

What All Has He Renamed In Last Two Years?
After returning to office in 2025, Trump announced that the Gulf of Mexico would be renamed the Gulf of America for US federal usage. The decision had also triggered a diplomatic dispute with Mexico, which continues to use the original name. According to Trump, such decisions were a way to recognise American history and contributions.
Lake Ontario Becomes Lake America
The Gulf of Mexico is not the only geographical landmark renamed by Trump. In August this year, Trump announced that Lake Ontario, which lies between the US state of New York and Canada, would be called Lake America for US federal purposes. The announcement came amid growing trade tensions between the two countries.
Trump said the new name would take effect immediately for US federal usage. “We're going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario effective immediately to Lake America. Lake of America was something I’ve been thinking about for a long time. We have a gulf and we have a lake. Now, all we need is an ocean. So, maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific. Maybe we’ll change them both,” Trump had said.
AI To SI
More recently on September 29, Trump officially renamed Artificial Intelligence (AI) to "Super Intelligence" (SI). He stated that he disliked the word "artificial" arguing that the word “artificial” makes the technology sound “fake”. He described it instead as “pure genius” and “very, very real intelligence”. Trump has also suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz as the ‘Trump Strait’ amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.
