SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Friday once again sparked a social-media debate with a short comment about Instagram. His remark quickly spread across X and other social media platforms, with netizens turning the statement into jokes, memes and also starting a discussion about whether social-media platforms really have a gender identity.

What Did Elon Musk Say?

The latest episode began when venture capitalist Geiger Capital said on X that it had deleted Instagram, describing the platform as being mainly associated with women and offering little value. Musk then responded to the post with a brief comment saying that Instagram is meant for girls. “Instagram is for girls,” Musk wrote.

His comment quickly attracted attention, with many users reacting and sharing their own takes. This is not the first time that Musk has made a similar remark about Instagram, a social media platform owned by Meta Platforms, whose CEO is Mark Zuckerberg. He had previously mocked the platform and even joked about men who send him their Instagram profiles amid rivalry with Meta.

Netizens React To Musk's Comment

Reacting to Musk’s comment, some users suggested that if Instagram is supposedly for women, then X must be the place for men. Others pointed out the irony of Musk criticising Instagram while having an account on the platform himself. Some users also created memes using scenes from the 2000 popular film American Psycho.

Another user joked about having to give up Instagram simply because Musk had made his declaration. A user wrote, "Bro realized that after creating an Insta account for himself." A second user commented, "Guys, looks like all of you need to delete your Instagram today. Elon just said it’s just for girls." A third user wrote, "X is for uncs." A fourth user commented, "Now I have to delete my insta..."

A user remarked, "Instagram may be for girls. X is where men bring its screenshots and discuss them for hours."' Another user added. "Damn is social media based on gender now?"
