Iran on Tuesday offered to open the choked Strait of Hormuz in 7 days with the condition that the United States eases its military presence in the region and lifts the blockade. The latest offer is Tehran's first pitch in months to consider opening the narrow waterway as both countries work to revive negotiations.
According to a Reuters report, Tehran has relayed the proposal to Washington through intermediaries and is likely to discuss it with the intermediary nations on the sidelines of the UNGA, where a delegation led by President Masoud Pezeshkian will be present.
"The US needs to announce that it wants to resolve the issue diplomatically, make that official, and then agree on a timeline for how the process will move forward", the senior Iranian official said.
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, who left Tehran for New York on Tuesday morning, will be meeting US President Donald Trump at the UN headquarters in New York, the report cited officials as saying.

The Iranian official stated that details on an agreement to end hostilities with Washington can be discussed in New York via mediators. Tehran's proposal was relayed to the US on September 16.
The officials said that the UNGA was an opportunity to revive diplomacy between the two countries, adding that it would happen if Washington takes tangible steps.
The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since the war started on February 28. The tensions again rose to a peak after peace talks in Islamabad failed and the US announced a counter-blockade to choke Iran's revenue through the waterway.
