Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to travel to the United States in the coming days amid heightened tensions to address the United Nations General Assembly.
According to a report by Tasnim news agency, visas for the Iranian delegation, including Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and others, have been approved by Washington.
The delegation will attend the UN's high-level meetings in New York. The report comes at a time when the two countries are at bitter terms over the war that started on February 28.
The United Nations General Assembly is set to convene from September 22 to 29 in New York. According to a news report by the BBC, the approval was consistent with the obligation. The delegation will face restrictions and will be smaller this year.
"Consistent with our host country obligations, the core delegation from the Iranian regime will be able to attend UN General Assembly High Level Week," a spokesman for the US State Department was quoted in the report as saying.
"The delegation will be under travel restrictions and will face prohibitions on the purchase of luxury and other goods per our policy. The delegation is smaller than last year," he added.
The inaugural debate day will include addresses from US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and French President Emmanuel Macron.
The US and Iran have been trading attacks on their assets in the Middle East since the war began. While Iran has primarily targeted US bases in the region, the US has targeted Iranian assets, including ships, ports, etc.
Amid the war between the two countries, Saudi Arabia has emerged as a new hotspot as Saudi and Iran-backed Houthis continue to exchange strikes.
