Nobel Peace Prize 2026: The Nobel Peace Prize for 2026 has been awarded to Indian-origin South African jurist Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and uphold international law. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on Friday, recognising 85-year-old Pillay’s exceptional courage and integrity in advancing a stronger global legal system and efforts to ensure that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are brought to justice.
Who Is Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay?
A press release by the Nobel Prize Organisation noted that Pillay has spent her career fighting discrimination and standing up for justice. Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin in Durban, South Africa, during apartheid, she faced a society marked by racial discrimination and segregation. She went on to become a lawyer and judge, defending Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists early in her career.
Later, she served as a judge in major international cases, continuing her efforts to uphold human rights and international law. Pillay has served as a judge on the High Court in South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She was also the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. More recently, Pillay had chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Pillay's Notable Works
Currenty, she serves as Judge on the International Court of Justice in the case where Myanmar stands accused of genocide. She is known for playing an important role in major international court cases, helping strengthen international law and hold governments and leaders accountable for their actions. Through her work, she has supported victims of violence and conflict and stressed that everyone must follow the law.
She also played a key role in a landmark case at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where the court recognised that rape and sexual violence could be crimes against humanity and acts of genocide. According to the press release, the case also marked the first time a person faced charges of encouraging genocide through propaganda.
