A 40-year-old New York Times technology executive, Jonathan McKinsey, was shot dead in a California parking lot on Saturday afternoon. Police have arrested his elderly in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, Chinese nationals in connection with the killing.

Shooting At Dublin Sports Ground

According to the New York Post report, McKinsey was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of Dublin Sports Grounds at around 3 pm. Officers and emergency responders arrived after several 911 calls. However, despite their attempts to save him, McKinsey died at the scene. An eyewitness told police that two masked people approached McKinsey and shot him several times.

Zhang and Chen were later arrested and booked into Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder. According to booking records, the couple faces several serious charges, including first-degree murder, felony conspiracy, illegally firing a gun and child endangerment.

McKinsey had joined The New York Times in 2023 as a senior engineering manager for its games platform. He worked on the technology behind popular games such as _Connections_ and helped manage systems handling large numbers of users.

Family And Legal Disputes

McKinsey was married to Candice Jang, the daughter of Zhang and Chen. Court records reportedly show that McKinsey and Jang were living separately and had both sought domestic violence restraining orders against each other in 2025. He had accused Jang and her parents of mistreating him as he was transgender, including physical and verbal abuse.

McKinsey once claimed that his mother-in-law had called him and one of his sons a "disgusting queer", a "pervert", and a "monster". Citing restraining order records, The Mercury News reported McKinsey had claimed that Jang had tried to pull medical tubes out of his body in 2010, when he was transitioning from a woman to a man in 2010.

Similarly, Jang also made allegations against McKinsey, including claims that he had physically assaulted her and abused one of her children. He was charged in 2025 with two misdemeanour counts of child abuse and was released under conditions.
