Saudi-Houthi Conflict: Saudi Arabia has issued a stern red line warning to Houthi rebels after the Saudi-led coalition intercepted and destroyed an explosive-laden drone just outside the prohibited airspace of the holy city of Mecca. The interception has triggered unprecedented emergency security alerts across Mecca and Jeddah, marking a sharp escalation in the conflict between Riyadh and Yemen's Houthis.
Saudi Arabia's Alert For Mecca, Jeddah
According to coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki, this high-stakes provocation follows a week of cross-border strikes by the Iran-backed group, representing the first direct Houthi attempt to target Islam's holiest city since a ballistic missile launch in July 2017. Earlier on Tuesday, Saudi Arabia had issued emergency alerts warning people in several cities, including Jeddah, Mecca and Taif, about a “potential danger.”
The Saudi Civil Defence had asked residents to stay calm, move to a safe place, and follow official instructions until the danger passes. Sirens and phone alerts were also reported in other parts of the country, including Yanbu, AlUla, Abha and Jazan. However, the warning in Mecca was notable as it was reportedly the first emergency alert of this type issued there since the latest regional conflict began.
Houthis Reject Attack Claim
Following allegations from Saudi Arabia regarding a targeted attack on Mecca, Houthi political bureau spokesperson Hazem al-Assad denied the claims, calling them a "worn-out lie" on X. Al-Assad asserted that the accusation has been deployed previously by Saudi authorities and no longer misleads the public.
The latest escalation is significant as the situation has increased security pressures around some of Islam’s most important religious sites. As per reports, the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, and Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem are facing heightened security concerns as regional conflicts continue to rise.
US Issues Travel Advisory For Saudi Arabia
Meanwhile, the United States has placed Saudi Arabia under a Level 3 "Reconsider travel" advisory and issued a Level 4 "Do Not Travel" warning for the Yemen border. Washington has cited risks from Iranian drone and missile "attacks", armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans and local laws concerning social media activity.
The US State Department, in its travel advisory said, "Reconsider travel to Saudi Arabia due to risk of Iranian drone and missile targeting of American interests, armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans, and local laws regarding social media activity." It added that some areas of the region have increased risk.
