Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday met International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in New York. After the meeting, Sharif shared details of his interaction with the IMF chief in a post on his official X account. However, Sharif’s post was met with a wave of trolling and memes on social media.

Shehbaz Sharif Meets IMF Chief

“Pleasure meeting IMF Managing Director Ms. Kristalina Georgieva in New York this morning. I thanked her for the Fund’s continued support and deeply appreciated her personal role in strengthening Pakistan’s constructive partnership with the IMF,” he wrote. Sharif also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to economic reforms, noting that Islamabad has been moving towards economic recovery.

He wrote, “I reaffirmed our Government’s strong ownership of the reform agenda and our resolve to stay the course. Despite regional conflict and external inflationary pressures, Pakistan is steadily moving from macroeconomic stabilization towards economic recovery, with improved fiscal discipline, stronger external buffers and growing investor confidence.”

The Pakistan PM added that he and Georgieva discussed the country’s upcoming IMF programme review and further cooperation.

Meme Fest Explodes

While he said Pakistan was moving towards economic recovery, netizens questioned the country’s continued dependence on IMF assistance and mocked the meeting on social media.

One user wrote, “The Prime Beggar of Islamic Terrorist state of Pakis is on a Begging mission.” Another user commented, “Thats good. You need to maintain relationships better. She is the person who is actually giving food and shelter to paks. The day she takes out her hand you will become nallas.”

The meeting soon turned into a meme fest, with users sharing edited images and jokes about Pakistan’s borrowing from the IMF. One edited image was shared with the caption, “Leaked Pics of the IMF meeting”. The image appeared to show Sharif holding a book titled “HOW TO GET LOAN IN 5 MINS”.

Another edited meme showed Sharif taking out a bowl from his coat while speaking to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, with the caption, “30 seconds after meeting started.” A further edited version of Sharif’s picture with the IMF chief carried the caption, “Fixed the error,” and showed him again holding a bowl while engaged in conversation.
