Cape Town: In a shocking incident, at least 11 people were killed in a mass shooting at a house party in South Africa, police said Wednesday. One of the victims was a woman who was believed to be pregnant, police said in a statement. Three other people were wounded.
According to the police, the shooting happened on Tuesday night in the KwaMakhutha township around 30 kilometres south of the city of Durban on the east coast. The people had gathered at the house for a party when the suspects entered and opened fire, police said.
"Information available at this stage suggests that 13 men and one woman, who is believed to be pregnant, were reportedly having a party inside a house when three men arrived and opened fire on them," the BBC quoted a police statement.
As of now, none of the gunmen has been arrested, and police have launched a massive search for the suspects.
The motive for the attack is not known, but police said initial investigation showed some of the victims were known to authorities, without giving details.
South Africa has one of the world's highest murder rates, averaging about 60 a day.
