A 19-year-old man has been arrested in Palatine, Illinois, in the United States, over an alleged plan to carry out a mass shooting that could have targeted Indians at a Hindu temple in the Aurora area. The suspect, identified as Alexandros Paporakis, was arrested on Sunday after the Palatine Police Department and the Mount Prospect Police Department investigated information about a possible shooting.
How Was He Arrested?
According to a press release by the FBI Chicago, the suspect was taken into custody before anyone was harmed. It stated that Palatine Police Department officers had received information about a possible mass shooting on Sunday shortly after 3:30 pm. The information came from a person who reported receiving concerning electronic messages from Paporakis.
Investigators stated that Paporakis had shared a document describing an alleged plan to carry out a mass shooting. He had also shared pictures of a rifle, rifle magazines, body armour and other tactical equipment. After receiving the information, the Palatine and Mount Prospect police departments worked together to locate the suspect.
He had driven from his mother's home in Palatine to the Aurora temple. According to authorities, he tried to open fire, but the gun jammed, forcing him to drive back home. There, he "searched internet trying to learn how to unjam his gun & called a colleague informing them of (his) intent to carry out a mass shooting."Subsequently, Paporakis was arrested when he was leaving his home in the 1300 block of North Baldwin Court in Palatine on the evening of October 11. According to investigators, he may have been planning an attack, potentially targeting a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area. However, police have not confirmed the exact location he intended to target.
Manifesto With Extremist Views Examined
During the search of his house, police recovered a rifle, several loaded rifle magazines, hundreds of rounds of additional ammunition, tactical equipment and other items believed to be linked to the investigation. They also found a tactical vest containing body armour and a patch displaying imagery associated with white supremacist extremism.
Meanwhile, a document allegedly written by Paporakis has also been examined by investigators. The document was titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto).” It reportedly contains white supremacist and extremist views, including references to violence against people of South Asian heritage, particularly those of Indian descent.
The writings also "expressed words of hate, violence, superior race and mass shooting of Indian people. His hatred was against Jewish people, African Americans, Indians, and "non-white" people." According to investigators, he also "expressed pleasure calling himself a sociopathic white supremacist Neo-Nazi filled with hatred, fantasizing about mass murder nearly every day."
Currently, Paporakis faces two criminal charges, which includes making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons. Police said the investigation remains active, and authorities are reviewing whether additional charges may be filed.
