US Midterm Election Results: Indian-origin Republican Vivek Ramaswamy has suffered a major defeat in the 2026 Ohio gubernatorial race, losing to Democratic candidate Amy Acton. With this victory, Acton becomes the first Democrat to win the Ohio governor's seat in 20 years and the first woman to be elected governor in the state's history.
According to The New York Times, Acton won the Ohio gubernatorial election with approximately 50.4 per cent of the vote, securing around 1.658 million votes. Ramaswamy finished second, securing approximately 46.2 per cent of the vote, or around 1.519 million votes. Despite receiving an endorsement from US President Donald Trump, Ramaswamy failed to defeat Democratic candidate Acton, who has now made history as Ohio's first elected woman governor.
Why Ramaswamy's Defeat Matters?
Ramaswamy's defeat in the Ohio gubernatorial election marks a significant setback for Trump and the Republican Party, as Democrats ended the GOP's 16-year hold on the governor’s office. It raises questions over the campaign strategy in a state that had been a stronghold for Republicans. For the unversed, Ramaswamy's election campaign had drawn national attention following controversy over advertisement featuring Acton's estranged mother, who criticised her daughter.
The advertisement faced criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, including outgoing Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. However, Trump had praised the campaign ad, with Vice President JD Vance, who is from Ohio also defending it.
