United States President Donald Trump is reportedly among the potential nominees for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Kristian Berg Harpviken on Thursday stated that some 287 candidates will be considered for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for 2026. This includes 208 individuals and 79 organisations.

287 Names Shortlisted

According to Reuters report, Harpviken said that there are many new names on the list compared to previous years. He said he was surprised by the amount of change in nominations each year. He also emphasised that despite rising global conflicts and pressure on international cooperation, the Peace Prize remains highly relevant. “The Peace Prize is even more important in a period like the one we’re living in,” Harpviken said, adding that there is still “as much good work, if not more, than ever.”

Is Trump A Contender?

Several reports suggest that leaders from Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have nominated Trump. However, Harpviken clarified that the committee does not officially confirm any names, as Nobel Prize nominations remain confidential for 50 years. Also, a nomination does not mean endorsement by the award committee.

Apart from members of the Nobel Committee, thousands of people around the world can submit nominations. These include members of governments and parliaments, current heads of state, university professors in fields such as history, social sciences, law, and philosophy, as well as former Nobel Peace Prize winners, among others.

Notably, Trump was also among the contenders for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize last year. He claimed he played a role in resolving several international wars. Last year, the prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for her efforts toward democracy and peaceful political change.

Announcement Date

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced on October 9, while the award ceremony will take place on December 10.
